Tadashi Kawamata is a Japanese mixed media artist born in 1953 on the Hokkaidō island. He works between Tokyo and Paris and has produced architectural works around the world. His work takes into account the architectural space as product and social context, whether it be urban or landscape. His pieces are often ephemeral, made from wood, sometimes with recyclable materials. A dialogue between past and present, interior and exterior, absence and presence is at the heart of his process.
Kwaata has taught at the Beaux-arts school of Paris and has exhibited at Madison Square Garden in 2008, the cadre d’events in Bordeaux in 2009, at the Centre Pompidou in 2010, Chaumont-sur-Loire in 2011 and at Gand and Abu Dhabi in 2012. In 1928 he is selected for the Venice Biennale and participated in the Documenta de Cassel in 1987. He did the artistic direction of the Yokohama Triennale in 2005. In 2013 he participated in Art Basel. The Collective Folie tower in the Parc Vilette in Paris and the in situ permanent installation Les Sentier de l’eau throughout Camargue are works that he made in 2013.
