FRANÇOISE CAUVIN-MONET

Upcoming
From February 14 to April 5 2025

Opening on Thursday, February 13 6-9 PM

From February 14 to April 5, 2025, Clavé Fine Art will present the work of French artist Françoise Cauvin-Monet (1926-2017) for the first time in a retrospective solo exhibition.

This gallery exhibition runs in parallel with the exhibition organized by the Musée Marmottan, from March 4 to 27, 2025, which will present the work of Françoise Cauvin-Monet on the occasion of the acquisition of her self-portrait to join the collections of the Institut de France.

The exhibition at Clavé Fine Art, bringing together some thirty works, is intended to be complementary, highlighting the diversity of her practice (oil, watercolor, ink, acrylic, gouache…) and the richness of the themes she tackled throughout her artistic life.

throughout her artistic life: figurative works, abstract works, portraits, animal drawings…

Grand-niece of Claude Monet, grand-daughter of his brother Léon, a great industrialist and collector of quality, François Cauvin-Monet never made a profession of her art, never exhibited during her lifetime, and yet she left a collection of over four thousand works at the end of her life.

Without belonging to any particular twentieth-century artistic movement, she followed the research of her contemporaries while developing a practice all her own.

Cubism, surrealism, neo-realism, lyrical abstraction, narrative figuration, art brut or even Cobra-inspired… it’s very interesting to find in her works the influences that ran through her while observing the way she appropriated them to go beyond them.

In 2023, her work was shown for the first time in a public institution at the “Léon Monet – frère de l’artiste et collectionneur” exhibition at the Musée du Luxembourg.

In 2025, the exhibition at the Clavé Fine Art gallery, in parallel with the exhibition at the Musée Marmottan, continues to promote the work of this talented woman artist.
